Aphid Control Introduction

sgp badgeSgt. Poopers provides all-natural non-toxic aphid control in Dallas, Texas starting at just $14.95 a week. We can destroy any aphid population with our proprietary essential-oil blend. We can spray just once or regularly to keep them at bay since a neighboring colony can simply sprout wings and fly off to infect your plants. Aphids not only suck the life out of certain plants, shrubs and trees (like crape myrtles) they infect those plants with up to 110 plant viruses! Aphid excrement also causes black mold to grow on plants that exacerbates the problems.

Non-Toxic Aphid Control

Our essential oil spray kills aphids on contact; it wipes them out completely in one or two applications. Future applications keep any new aphids from taking control. Our essential oils smell great and do not harm plants, soil, pets, or beneficial insects like honeybees, butterflies or lady bugs. And incidentally, one ladybug can eat 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. Using a multi-step filtration process, our essential oil blend is purified of all unnecessary contaminants and any other potentially harmful ingredients. It does not contain phenols or phenolic compounds which can be harmful to birds. In fact, this essential oil is so non-toxic it does not require regulation by the EPA and cannot be over applied.

Aphid-Caused Diseases

aphid face

Affectionately known as plant lice, aphids include more than 4,000 different species and come in all colors. Many are plant-specific but overall, aphids like a lot of the same food we like. They eat farm produce from corn to soybeans. They like ornamental flowers like roses. arrowheadThey love shrubs, and trees like the crape myrtle, so popular in Dallas.

With their inverted-pentagram layout of antenna, piercing vampire-tooth straw, and shoulders, their devilish are a hint this cute little bug infesting your plants can become a destructive pest of biblical proportions. "Sure" you say, "Every aphid looks like the Prince of Darkness, so what? It's what's inside that counts!" True, true! So, to be fair, let's consider what's inside.

Umm... what's inside is an irresistible stew of deadly plant viruses. Delish! Just one aphid species is a vector for some 110 different viruses harmful to plants.

Besides being filled with plant diseases, aphid saliva is toxic. Aphid saliva and the viruses they spread can stunt or slow plant growth or kill plants altogether. Their presence can cause low yields; wilting; and brown, yellow, curled or mottled leaves.

Black Mold from Aphids

sgtpoopers buttonAccording to ants, aphid excrement is sweet. Ant's like it a lot. Let's hope the sweetness of their excreta was discovered by chemical analysis and not because some entomologist "for the sake of science" tasted aphid excrement. Reportedly, makers of the artificial sweetener aspartame originally considered going with a sugar substitute made from aphid excrement. But drinking anal liquid failed to win over focus groups of humans, though focus groups of ants were wildly in favor. Anyway, they went with a sweet chemical poison that causes brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes. Thanks, Monsanto!

The problem with aphid "honeydew," as it's called, is that it coats the leaves and stems of the host (victim) plant with the perfect nutrient for a secondary infection of black mold. You've probably seen this mold on some of your crepe myrtles trees—it looks like black soot on the stems.

How to Stop Aphids

aphids infestation

If you've ever seen an aphid, you've seen how they form a living carpet of variously-sized plant lice all the same color, but different sizes calmly killing your plants. What makes these little creatures so prolific? A trick of asexual reproduction.

Aphids are born pregnant. And inside the baby is another baby that is also pregnant. World, meet nature's creepiest Russian Doll. Aphids give birth to live pregnant clone daughters at the rate of about 12 per day. This is called parthenogenesis. Each daughter, in turn, will be ready to give birth to her own live pregnant daughters in just seven days. That's right — aphid babies can have their own live babies almost immediately.

How Aphids Defend Themselves

sgt poopers sealBesides their sheer numbers and replication abilities making them impossible to wipe out by ladybugs and lacewings (aphid predators), aphids have another trick up their cornicles.

When attacked, individual aphids secrete drops of "defensive fluid" from a pair of spiked projections called "cornicles" which stick out of their backs like a tiny jet pack. They smear this fluid on enemies even as they are being eaten alive. The defensive fluid doesn't hurt the enemy, but it chemically tells every other aphid to instantly stop feeding and drop to the ground just like teenagers do when their parents holler "I love you" at school.

How to Stop an Aphid Infestation

aphids on rose bush

Except for their annoying habit of destroying our farm produce, gardens, flowers, shrubs, and some trees, aphids don't harm humans. But they're hell on plants and they reproduce exponentially. Plants, when infested by these parasites, are put into a state of distress. Once aphids arrive, how do you get rid of them?

sgt poopers mascot ovalAs usual, there are two choices. You can hire someone to spray noxious chemicals. But have you ever noticed how noxious chemicals... within 20 or 30 years—whoops!—turn out to be deadly and pretty much cause cancer? NEVER SAW THAT COMING, right? We humans are anything if not suckers for trusting Big Chemical.

Sgt. Poopers has a better idea. We use an effective and 100% natural, all-organic control agent that is non-toxic to humans, pets, plants, and beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. It's a human-safe, pet-safe essential oil blend with thousands of five-star reviews. Our product kills all current aphids on contact in any stage of their life cycle. The presence of this essential oil also keeps new aphids from starting future infestations.

We spray our non-toxic control agent weekly and are the only pest control service in Dallas that does. Sgt. Poopers business model is built on weekly visits. This means you receive three or four times the service with no risk and at less cost than what traditional synthetic-pesticide companies would charge. We go through your entire yard and protect every vulnerable plant that is under attack by aphids including flowers, shrubs, and crepe myrtles. Sgt. Poopers aphid control treatment also kills and helps to repel mosquitoes.

All-Natural Aphid Prevention

If aphids are bad in your neighborhood, it will be a good idea to start a program of preventive maintenance before an aphid invasion/onslaught begins. Aphids can spread some 110 different plant viruses. We can kill the aphids, but your plants may still suffer from a viral infection!

Several years ago, a University of Cambridge researcher discovered that certain viruses actually use aphids as pawns in the same way that universities have been using students to spread chaos for the last 100 years. Creepy right? Here's how it goes:

  1. A traveling aphid lands on an infected plant and starts a colony
  2. All members of the new aphid colony contract the plant virus
  3. The virus alters the plant's biochemistry so it becomes toxic to aphids
  4. The aphids sprout wings and fly off to new plants transporting the infection with them
  5. When the aphids land on a new plant, they infect the new plants with the virus

If you purchase our weekly treatment for mosquitoes, we can add on aphid control for just a few dollars more. But if you don't care about mosquitoes, you can just have us spray for aphids, specifically targeting vulnerable plants. By having Sgt. Poopers maintain the presence of essential oil in your backyard all year round, you can prevent aphid infestations as our essential oils are absorbed by the plants.
