Dog Waste is Not Fertilizer

I believe Sgt. Poopers was the first to point out this common misconception and make it broadly known in 2008. Dog waste is above-ground sewage, not fertilizer. In just one week, one dog can deposit billions of disease-bearing microbes in your yard. Fecal bacteria and viruses can survive for months on the ground, and readily travel via shoes and paws to clean floors inside your home. Flies, rats and roaches feed on dog waste and reproduce in rapidly to spread more germs throughout your property. These “filth pests” are not benign: the more disease they spread, the better they are. You can’t expect to have a sanitary home if your backyard is contaminated.

Image of bare feet standing in clean clover. To solve this problem, we offer both residential and commercial pet waste management for natural grass, artificial turf, flower beds, and landscapes. To better shield Dallas, Texas children, adults and pets from disease, our services include disinfection and deodorization. We spray each area were dog waste touched the ground using a non-toxic hospital disinfectant—the same used to decontaminate when Ebola hit Dallas in 2014.

Everything we do is designed to be professional and hassle free. We work quietly in the background, arriving on the same days each week to remove every trace of bio-contaminants. Our standard is perfection: to achieve that, we crisscross and inspect every inch of your yard to ensure nothing has been missed.

Sgt. Poopers® Conservation Arrowhead"Park Rangers to the American Backyard"

A backyard contaminated by germs, odors, dog waste, and disease-carrying insects is no walk in the park! Our procedures and protocols protect and conserve the most precious parkland of all — the one you call home. It’s like having a park ranger for your own backyard which is why we say, “We treat your yard like a National Park!”

Though humble, the American backyard is perhaps the most overlooked parkland of all.  What place is more central to the life of a family, child or pet? Your view may be less than majestic, yet it it the same Earth that connects to the Majestic giving you pause for reflection and recreation.

Dog Waste Toxicity

Many parents do not realize how easily fecal coliform and other toxic bacteria found in dog waste can be transmitted to their children. Germs on the grass readily transfer to shoes, carpet and feet.

Sgt. Poopers® Mascot, Maria 2006-2017

  • Dog waste is not fertilizer (manure) which comes only from herbivores
  • Manure comes from cows, horses, sheep, and goats; not dogs
  • Manure is good for plants because it IS plants
  • DFW's 1.2 million dogs deposit 900,000 lbs of toxic waste on the ground each day
  • Per the EPA, dog waste contains 20 million germs per gram (kernel of corn size)
  • Fecal bacteria and  viruses can survive for months on the ground
  • Shoe average 420,000 live bacteria from dog waste on their soles
  • Up to 99% of fecal bacteria transfer easily to clean floors inside homes
  • Cow manure is 80¢ lb, dog waste has $0 commercial value because it's toxic

Dog waste Environmental Impact

Image of toilet in a backyard setting

Dog waste is like having toilets empty into your backyard. Many diseases can be spread from dog poop to humans just by walking through contaminated grass.

Dogs feces contain more than sixty human-communicable diseases. One gram of dog poop contains more than 20 million “parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens and viruses harmful to humans” according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Dog waste has no value, unlike manure, because fruit or vegetables grown in dog poop can make people ill.  Manure only comes from grazing animals (vegetarians) like cattle, horses, sheep and goats that don’t eat meat. Their manure is healthy for grass because it is grass. Dogs are meat eaters.

Dog Waste, Risk of Infection

Image of bacteriaDogs produce 10 times the fecal coliform of plant eating animals like cattle. Fecal organisms from dog waste can easily survive for months and longer on the ground. Toxocaris (roundworm) eggs remain viable for up to 3 years and readily infect humans. A study found that walking through poop-contaminated yards put some 421,000 harmful bacteria on shoes. Worse, up to 99% of those bacteria transferred easily to tiles and carpet inside homes. (Ref: Department of Soil, Water & Environmental Science at the University of Arizona, April 2008)

Image of Sgt. Poopers® Disinfection and Deodorizing button

If that’s not bad enough, rain and sprinkler systems wash germs directly into lakes and rivers—the source of our drinking water. That’s why with 1.2 million dogs in north Texas, dog waste is a leading cause of groundwater pollution—the daily equivalent of an entire city’s sewage—untreated and unchecked—unless someone picks it up! In fact, DFW dogs produce 900,000 lbs of solid waste per day much of which is washed into our waterways including White Rock Lake, Turtle Creek and the Trinity River.

Dog Waste Ecology

Sgt. Poopers can repair the Ecology of your lawn. The process begins by removing the contaminates that kill the grass and pollute the soil, particularly waste from dog and secondly by treating with all-natural essential oils to repel insects and pests.

The canine process of digestion converts only about half of foodstuffs into calories that support life. The remaining 50% of the potential calories from the food are still in the waste. These calories represent a significant bonanza to organisms that feed on waste including flies, roaches, rats and fungi.

Image of a house flyFlies can detect and are attracted to the smell of fresh dog waste like humans might be attracted to a bakery or restaurant. They eat and lay eggs into the mixture, and new generations will stay in the same area and make an effort to spread as much bacteria as possible. If a fly is successful at making you sick, that means more waste, vomit, or even a dead corpse for them to eat. For this reason flies, roaches and rats are called "filth pests." The don't just consume filth, they proliferate by spreading disease.

Dog urine (and feces) can kill sections of grass leaving brown spots in the grass. These dead areas, called “lawn burn,” are caused by an excess of nitrogen and ammonia salts, specifically “ammonium nitrate” which is a common ingredient in fertilizer, a salt of ammonia. Sgt. Poopers can often restore the grass surprisingly quickly.

Dog Waste Urine Saturation

GRASS:  It doesn't take much dog urine to toxify the ground due to its contaminates of nitrogen and ammonia salts. Since dog urine makes the soil toxic to plant life, it's not a matter of bringing the grass "back to life," but enabling new grass to grow into the dead area by detoxifying the soil so it can support life once more. Left untreated, your grass may not re-grow until next season. But with our treatment, you can fully expect the brown patches to begin to re-green within two week with full recovery in roughly six weeks or less. In fact, we've seen stunning improvements within one week!

Couple wearing gas masksARTIFICIAL TURF: No one wants their backyard to smell like a bus-station urinal, especially the neighbors. Urine saturation in artificial turf can make the area uninhabitable, the air unfit to breath.  Sgt. Poopers can fix the problem and prevent urine odor from recurring using our powerful deodorizer that chemically destroys the source of the odor in seconds: bacteria encased in biofilm. Miraculously, our deodorizer uses no fragrance, perfume, nor scent. It doesn't cover up the smell but eradicates the cause... all while being completely non-toxic to people and pets. LEARN MORE

Dog waste removal and soil Detoxification

Our all-natural, made-in-the-USA, soil treatment can quickly restore brown spots in the grass (lawn burn) killed by dog urine and feces. Our all-natural treatment is safe for your lawn, children, and pets. It provides non-pathogenic nitrogen-consuming bacteria to the soil, plus humates and a wetting agent that reduces water surface tension holding salts. It allows the grass to re-grow in the damaged areas without reseeding. In many cases we see striking improvement in just one week! Our multiple-action formula,

  • Image of brown spots in grass caused by dog urine.consumes ammonia from dog urine
  • binds the salts from the urine
  • increases soil permeability so salts can be washed out
  • works in all tested geographies, Dallas area soil types
  • works with all grass species
  • enables grass recovery

Dog Waste, Disposal of

Sgt. Poopers® Conservation Control Corps sealMany customers ask what we do with the waste we remove. There is nothing useful that can be done with dog waste since it is completely worthless in terms of its commodity. It cannot be used as fertilizer because it is toxic. City ordinances require dog waste be sent to the landfill where it will be contained and will not leach toxins into the environment.

There is some gardening lore that if you put some dog waste under a non-blooming rose bush, it will cause the bush to bloom. That may be so, but the EPA warns against the use of dog waste as fertilizer due to the pathogens it contains. If you grow vegetables or fruit in dog waste, the bacteria can contaminate the flesh so that even one bite could make them sick. While Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet," tasting one so grown is ill advised.

Dog Waste Deodorizing

epa sealSgt. Poopers uses specialized industrial equipment to apply an EPA-registered odor eliminator that neutralizes the source of odors on a molecular level. Certain odors are perceived as "offensive" because the human body recognizes the source of malodor as disease-causing germs. The simple truth is that odor is caused by bacteria. The smell of dog waste is alarming to people because it represents a compelling risk to human health. Our antimicrobial deodorizer destroys the cause of malodor by oxidizing the microscopic organisms that cause the odor in the first place. The smell simply vanishes right before your... nose. No scents, perfumes nor fragrances are needed because there's nothing left to "cover up." It’s hypoallergenic, non-hazardous, non-irritating, and contains no volatile compounds (VOCs) to pollute our beautiful City of Dallas atmosphere and your Dallas neighbors will thank you for the odor-free air.

Dog Urine Grass Spot Restoration

Brown spots in the grass are caused by urine from female dogs. Males tend to put a little here and a little there, whereas females release everything in one spot. It’s the concentration of dog urine that kills the grass, and specifically it’s the excess ammonia salts and nitrogen that cause grass roots to die.

Sgt. Poopers can prevent the problem in the first place or restore your grass after the fact. We use a treatment that breaks down the excess salts and nitrogen so they wash away. This allows your grass to regrow much sooner than it would be able to if you did nothing.
