Black Mold and Mildew Introduction

We Kill Toxic Mold and Mildew
Without Toxic Chemicals

Sgt. Poopers® Chartered Conservationist badgeSgt. Poopers provides a unique protocol to control of toxic "black" mold and mildew in indoor and outdoor settings using our next-generation hospital-grade disinfectant / fungicide that kills harmful mold, mildew and spores, plus bacteria and viruses.

Technically, mold itself is not toxic. Certain molds and fungi produce a family of compounds called mycotoxins which are highly poisonous. Mycotoxins can be found in the foods we eat and they can make you sick. Symptoms include a long, long list ailments. So it's smart to heighten your situational awareness to recognize and exclude mold and mildew from your environment, both indoors and out.

Both mold and mildew usually produce a telltale musty odor. In the beginning stages, you may smell it before you see mold or mildew as in the case of a damp towel or laundry that sat in the washing machine too long. These dank-smelling "microbial volatile organic compounds" signal us to take action against the growing threat.

One Disinfectant to Rule Them All

Sgt. Poopers Conservation ArrowheadOf the six most dangerous varieties of mold (see below), Sgt. Poopers disinfectant / fungicide kills them all and stops their spores from germinating with a 99.999% rate of success. Our weekly disinfection obliterates and prevents spores from mold and mildew from germinating. It also breaks down and eliminates allergens from pet dander, and allergens from dust mites and cockroaches. It also deodorizes since odors are caused by bacteria, mold and mildew. Sgt. Poopers has effectively pioneered one of the world's most effective 360° surface disinfection systems for touchless whole-room microbial decontamination with prices starting at just 2¢ per square foot for indoor weekly service.

Our non-toxic hospital-grade disinfectant and fungicide is EPA-registered in all 50 states, NSF rated as "No Rinse Required" on food contact surfaces even at full strength, hypo allergenic, pH balanced, odorless with no offensive odor, no perfume, no fragrance, no taste. It is non-irritating to skin, non-corrosive and non-reactive so it is safe on treated articles including floors, carpeting, fabrics, natural stones, granite, marble, tile, plastics, furniture, wood, countertops, faucets, walls and draperies, plus electronic equipment like cell phones, keyboards, computers, laptops, monitors, stereos and TVs.  Application does not require gloves or respirators; and it emits no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It's even listed by the CDC for use against bacteria, viruses... even Ebola and antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" like MRSA and HAPI.

Our advanced no-touch electrostatic spray technology applies an electrical charge to each disinfectant droplet. Acting like tiny magnets, the mist adheres magnetically to exposed surfaces on all sides of each object, making for true 360° disinfection to reset the pathogen count to near zero.

"Toxic mold seeks new home"

At Sgt. Poopers, we know somerthing about avoiding toxic relationships... especially black mold! Your environment will be so much better without you know who [Toxic Mold] hanging around. But don't take our word for it. Listen to what these moldy species say in their own words in such unsavory places like moldy bathroom walls or AshleyMoldyson.com where their slogan is "Life's short. Have a toxic affair."

  • moldy treehouseAlternaria alternata: "Hi, I'm an allergy-causing fungus that loves romantic places like wet paper and cardboard, woven fabrics and stored food. Some say I'm 'easy' because I'll grow on anything — electric cables, polyurethane, jet fuel, sewage, effluents... Ha! What do they know? The truth is I'm just misunderstood. But also super hot. Maybe too hot... apparently 70% of people who are alergic to mold are not a good match for my affections. All I can say is, if you give me a chance, I'll grow on you."
  • Aspergillus fumigatus: "Just because I cause pathogenic diseases, respiratory illnesses, and bloodstream infections, is no reason to treat me like I'm some sort of... awful toxic mold! Although I was teased mercilessly in school, I never let my surname 'fumigatus' get me down. Today, I'm well adjusted — as happy outdoors as indoors. I'm kind of a foodie and particularly fond of rotting vegetables, plants, soil, household dust, building materials, and your food. I do fantasize about one day changing my name. P.S. – Umm, are your lungs damp and warm? I'm asking for a friend."
  • Aspergillus versicolor: "Some molds can be so finicky or demanding, but I'm as low maintenance as it gets. I come from underprivileged circumstances like radioactive uranium mines, the Arctic, the Dead Sea, and the USSR's Mir space station (UNTIL IT BROKE APART AND BURNED UP IN THE ATMOSPHERE). I've never had it easy. Perhaps that accounts for some of 'anger issues' involving the production of mycotoxin, okay? Let's see you live in places where practically nothing else grows. Compared to the Dead Sea, your home and lungs are like a palace! I'll be so happy there! By the way, I can change color as I grow, so if you don't like me white, I can turn yellow, tan, pale green, emerald green or pink... whatever! When dining, my favorite menu items are seeds, nuts, cereal grains, dried meats, dairy products, water-damaged buildings, wallpaper, insulation, and carpet. My sexy secret fetish: Take off your shoes, because I want to infect your toenails and turn them yellow or white. Can I say that?"
  • Chaetomium globosum: "When someone is winner, it say lot about character, no? Out of 365,000 species of mold, I win Number Three "Most Common Indoor Fungal Contaminant"!!! Wherever have damp mouldy building, there I am on drywall, wallpaper, window frames, baseboards, plywood and even carpet... and yah, fingernails... and some toenail meybe. Haha, you get obsessed with Globosum when I get under your skin! By the way, I know what you thinking, 'Globosum, what is story of unusual name, glow plus bosum?' Haha, for me to know and you to find out! You see? Just because comrade is 'common' does not mean unexceptional, no? Plus, in my village, I am known as great cook! My favorite dish — homemade mycotoxin!"
  • Penicillium sp.: "You might think a mold responsible for saving millions of lives by producing the first ever modern antibiotic would be a boring science nerd. But you'd be wrong. Dead wrong. When things get 'steamy,' I like to losen up and can be downright allergenic. As for perfume, I've got a number of intoxicating scents including my fav, Eau de Mycotoxin! I told you I had a dark side. As for romance, that old fashion part of me loves to infest a damp mattresses. But don't get the idea I'm hard to please. I'll show what I can do on wet building materials, walls and wallpaper, dust, floor, upholstered furniture, and rugs. No one has ever rolled out the red carpet for me, but if they did, I'd eat it."
  • Stachybotrys chartarum: "So what if I have a bad reputation as the #1 toxic mold? Mycotoxins don't define who I am so don't be a RACIST MOLDAPHOBIC MYCOTOXIGYNIST pig! Any kind of mold spores can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and various respiratory disorders so it's not just me. C'mon, help me out here, right? Let's meet up. Any slimy place will do — moist wood, drywall, wallpaper, insulation backing or cardboard boxes. BTW, I'll be dressed in greenish-black!"

Limiting Mycotoxin Exposure

Mycotoxins are not just "chemical by-products of mold metabolism." They are weapons. Tigers have claws. Bulls have horns. Roses have thorns. Mold has poision. Hypothetically, if someone dies from mycotoxin exposure it's the mold that benefits; they become mold food. It's smart to avoid weaons designed to kill you.

Mycotoxin exposure happens by inhaling, ingesting, or through direct contact — in other words mycotoxins can be absorbed though the skin. If you see mold, don't touch it, don't sit on it, don't lean on it, don't eat it, and don't breathe it.

moldy outdoor toysOUTDOOR FURNITURE / CUSHIONS / UMBRELLAS: If your outdoor furniture or cushions are growing mold, and you sit on them, you could absorb mycotoxins directly through your skin.

OUTDOOR SHEDS: If you have an outdoor shed of any construction—wood, metal, or plastic—mold can grow in it. If you go inside and breath the air, you could inhale mycotoxins.

OUTDOOR PLAYHOUSES: If your kids have a playhouse or treehouse exposed to rain or sprinkler systems, toxic mold can contaminate it surfaces.

PLASTIC TOYS: If you have outdoor plastic toys like those typically made by Playschool, water can get inside and grow mold which can spread mycotoxins to your children.

DOG HOUSES: Mycotoxins are just as toxic to animals as to humans.

Mycotoxins are also found in many of the foods we love to eat including nuts, grains, cereal, spices, coffee beans, cocoa beans, dried fruits, apples. If farm animals like chickens or cows are fed frain contaminated by mycotoxins, their eggs, milk or other dairy products like cheese could become toxic.

How to Kill Toxic Mold and Mildew

Mold can't live without moisture, so remediation always includes not only removing the mold, but eliminating any source of moisture that feeds it. But in the real world, that's not always possible. So Sgt. Poopers provides another solution. Our business model puts us in backyards on a weekly or even a daily basis. That makes it possible for us to do things no other company can do, like destroy mold and keep it destroyed by treating relevant areas weekly

All we have to do is spray it once a week with our hospital-grade, non-toxic fungicide / disinfectant / deodorizer and it's game over for 99.999% of molds, mildew, bacteria and virsuses. Not only does our treatment kill mold and mildew, it stops spores from being able to germinate. On a microscopic level, it's complete Shock and Awe.

What is Toxic Mold

fence moldWithout a lab test it's virtually impossible to know if a particular mold is actually the deadly variety known as "black mold" or "toxic mold." That species is called Stachybotrys (pronounced: stack-e-bot-tris). Other molds can produce mycotoxin and they come in all colors. Since it's virtually impossible to identify a particular mold as either toxic or benign, the best solution is to kill any existing mold of any kind and prevent it from coming back.

Mold is a fuzzy surface growth that thrives in warm, wet or humid conditions on many kinds of surfaces. It can be hues of green, pink, yellow, brown, gray, black or white and even the same species can manifest different colors depending on the media where it is growing and other environmental factors. Worldwide, there are about 365,000 different species! Many look almost identical.

Toxic mold can be life-threatening to infants, the elderly and the infirm, but symptoms can affect anyone. Health effects include respiratory problems, migraines, allergic reactions, and inflammation of the joints.

Mold commonly causes allergenic reactions. Other forms of mold can cause disease. A person in good health could be less bothered by a "toxic" mold, than someone who is allergic to a non-toxic variety.

History of Toxic Mold

August Carl Joseph Corda was the first person to describe toxic black mold, which he did in 1837. For the next 90 years no one listened.

Then, in the 1920s there was a mysterious problem. Horses, cows and sheep started dying at an alarming rate from nervious system complications and extreme blood loss. Not until 1938 was the cause isolated — black toxic mold growing in their hay or feed. Soon after, similar symptoms were noticed in farm workers by Russian doctors. In their case, these were all people who handled the contaminated feed.

They soon noted that people who ate the grains contaminated by this mold were also coming down with diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. In some cases the disease proved fatal.

What is Mildew

Mildew can cause headaches, plus a range of respiratory ailments. Aggressive species can even grow in your lungs!

Mildew can look fluffy or dusty. Fluffy mildew starts yellow then goes to brown. Dusty / powdery mildew starts off white, then changes to yellowish brown / black.

Besides wet laundry,  mildew commonly grows on patio furniture, shower curtains, window sills, and bathroom tile. It also likes starchy plants like corn, beans, potatos, tomatos, rice and more.

Reproduction is both sexually and asexually, via the production of spores.

Mold and Mildew Control for Patio Furniture, Cushions, and the underside of umbrellas

If your outdoor furniture or cushions are growing toxic black mold, and you or your pets sit on them, you could absorb mycotoxins directly through your skin. Mold loves damp textiles, so it's not a question if mold will develop, but when. The normal solution is to replace... instead of doing that, we can preserve your furniture economically.

Table umbrellas tend to grow mold on their undersides especially when exposed to rain. We can keep your umbrellas free of mold and free of toxins so you can enjoy the shade with out the worry!

If your kids have a playhouse or treehouse exposed to rain or sprinkler systems, toxic mold can contaminate it surfaces. Any kind of wood will grow mold sooner or later, if it is exposed to any kind of moisture at all. That mold can not only make the structure more hazardous, mold is hazardous in itself and kids should not be touching it. Not all mold is toxic, but toxic mold can come in many colors. It's safest to assume any mold you see may be toxic and either kill it or avoid it.
